\section{Basic Course Information}

\noindent{\bf Prerequisites:} Math 3013.

\noindent{\bf Textbook and Content:} {\em Abstract Algebra, An introduction}
by Thomas W. Hungerford, BROOKS/COLE 1997, Second Edition.
ISBN: 0--03--010559--5.

Basic Algebraic Structures, Elementary properties of Groups, Rings,
Integral Domains, and Fields. The course is the first course for students
to start using Logic and Set to properly prove any math--statement.
{\bf It is essential to {\em write in clear and complete language
the reasoning used in solving a problem}. Answers along will not receive
full credit.}

\noindent{\bf Class Time:} 9:30--10:20am MWF, start on January 12, 2009.

\noindent{\bf Class Room:} HES 331.

\noindent{\bf Office Hours:}  8:30am--9:20am MWF.
Highly recommended to
take full and consistent advantage on my office hours. Feel free to
call/email/fax me at any time or use D2L. Please do not hesitate to seek any
appropriate out--of--class help from me in your efforts to master the subjects.

\section{Exams, Homework and Grade}

Your grade will be determined by the scores on the 3 fifty--minute tests
each of which is worth 100pts.
Homework is worth 200pts and
the final exams is worth 100pts. Your final grade will be
$E^{'}s + HW + F:$

\noindent{510--600} as {\bf A};  450--509 as {\bf B}; 390--449 as {\bf C};
330--389 as {\bf D}; 0--329 as {\bf F}.

\noindent{The cutoff} might be lower slightly at the end of the term,
but this
is not guaranteed. No makeup will be given.
Your Exam score will be counted zero if you miss the exam.

\noindent{\bf First Exam:} February 20, 2009;

\noindent{\bf Second Exam:} March 27, 2009;

\noindent{\bf Third Exam:} April 24, 2009;

\noindent{\bf Final Exam:} Monday May 4, 2009, 8:00am -- 9:50am at HES 331.

\subsection{Attendance Policy} Attendance is not a part of your grade in
the
course, but it is {\bf VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED}. You are responsible for
all
material covered in class and all assignments. Experience has shown a
definite
correlation between poor class attendance and low grades.

\subsection{Main Office} Main office of Math Department 401 MS, phone
number:
405 -- 744 -- 5688. Fax number: 405 -- 744 -- 8275.

\subsection{Homework} Please {\bf DO THE HOMEWORK}. The purpose of
homework is to
provide a way for you to practice and get feedback on what you are
doing. I suggest
that you first read each section and try the assigned problems on your
own. Then discuss
your solutions with others in the class. {\bf Finally re--read your solutions
and make corrections
as needed}. {\em Practice makes perfect}.

\section{Homework}

Will be assigned in week (Check on the web-page for more information).
