Teacher certification track
This track is preparation for teaching mathematics in high school. The major requirements are identical to those of the mathematics option of the Secondary Education major. Students who complete the requirements for the SCED program with the mathematics option automatically complete all requirements for a second degree in mathematics. Similarly, if you choose the mathematics teacher certification track as your first major, a second major in SCED may be available to you. You should consult with an advisor in SCED.
In the teacher certification track, you can earn either a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. The Bachelor of Science places more emphasis on the natural and mathematical sciences, while the Bachelor of Arts places more emphasis on arts and humanities. The requirements for each degree are a little different.
- General Education Requirements: Both degrees require 8 hours of Natural Science (N). The B.S. degree requires all 8 of these be physics, while the B.A. requires 4 hours of physics and 4 more hours from any course with an N designation.
- College/Departmental Requirements: Requirements are summarized in the table below.
| Course | B.S. | B.A. |
| Orientation | 1 | 1 |
| Arts and Humanities | 3 | 9 |
| Natural Sciences | 9 | 3 |
| Foreign Languages | 0* | 10 |
| Total | 13 | 23 |
*Foreign language proficiency is required for both degrees programs, but for the BS it may be satisfied by two years of (the
same) foreign language in high school.
- Major Requirements: The general track for the B.A. degree offers somewhat more flexibility in choice of courses outside mathematics and places increased emphasis on communication skills. See the degree sheets for specifics. You can also look at a list of upper-division math courses.
